Louis Malle's Souffle au coeur, Le (The Murmur of the heart) is as close a depiction as possible, I think, of the intense emotions and muted (even forbidden?) passions that one finds in a DH Lawrence novel...especially those like Sons and Lovers and Women in Love...
How Malle manages to transmute what might be considered shocking or even reprehensible into a thing of pure love ("I do not want you to be unhappy,"..."This will be a secret between the two of us...") is evidence of master's touch...
Lea Massari as Clara Chevalier, the mother, is really such a lush beauty, and also, so tender...
