World Music

Thanks to the New Yorker piece, I now know of ethno-musicologist and super-talented artist/archivist more broadly, Deben Bhattacharya who carried out several field recordings of folk music from around the world!

Check out his "Music from the Desert Road"released in 1958:

Here is Bhattacharya's wikipedia page:

and here is another compilation he produced,

Here is a track from the album Paris to Calcutta released by Sublime Frequencies to celebrate the work of Bhattacharya:

World Music Resources [I know all the issues with "World Music"...]

1. Radio France International's World Music Matters -
Excellent music documentaries (audio) on musicians around the world!

"World Music Matters is RFI's weekly rendez vous with musicians making global beats."

2. Rootsworld's Cliff Furnard's hour-long WM program, part of RootsWorld Radio, hosted on Radio Pacoul

3. Of course, KPFA's Music of the World

4. And closer home on MIT's WMBR, Worldbeat  and Africa Kabisa, both on Sundays -

Noon-2pm Worldbeat
Hosted by: Brutus Leaderson
The show's goal is to present world cultures through music to WMBR's audience

4-6pm Africa Kabisa

Africa Absolutely! Since 1992, Boston's African music radio show. Classic and contemporary African and Afro-Caribbean music. Soukous, rumba, zouk, kompa, couper decaler, makossa, highlife, semba, and more. Plus interviews with guests on a variety of African-related topics.
