The light has gone out of Davis Square...
For me, as for many others, the primary attraction of Davis Square was never the bars...it was McIntyre & Moore, the bookstore. It afforded an entry into a charmed landscape with its aisles stocked with books on diverse topics, and an excellent collection of fiction in translation. If you went to Davis without an agenda, or maybe just to have a quick bite....you could always "dive in" to McIntyre before or after. It was like an anchor for me, the real although unexpressed reason to go there...to go to Diesel, or to Anna's or even to the Somerville Theater...It was my candy-and-comic-book store where I would drag myself to just go in and look...
But Mcintyre relocated to near Porter recently...and ever since, Davis Square does not hold the same charm for me...
Harvard Square has its many bookstores, notably Raven and Central Square has Rodneys and the Seven Stars...places one can seek refuge, a thirsty soul can find some nourishment...but what is in Davis Square for a thirsty soul? The bars...?
