This piece of news about the Supreme Court of India's "observations" that
"...in a caste-ridden society, no section or distinct groups of people can claim to be in majority. All are minorities among Hindus. Many of them claim such status because of their number and expect protection from the State on the ground that they are backward."
and
"that differential treatment on the basis of religion would further lead to divisions on basis of religious diversities in a country which is already facing class and social conflicts."
seem very bold and radical. Or at least refreshing. While this may get the goat of religous nationalists, I do not think a divided nation can go forward with its task of providing for a good life for its citizens. Maybe the Amercan Civil War can teach us something...
All these distinctions and subdivisions that divide India bring to mind VS Naipaul's third non-fiction book, India: A Million Mutinies Now.
