The problems with the relief efforts...

Interesting piece of news in the Times of India:

Tsunami relief: Collect aid and then dump it!
...
Some survivors informed volunteers that their relatives were considerably well off in Dubai and their own huts were full of everything they could possibly want, including video players and motorboats, before the seawaters washed everything away.

"It is a revelation for us. They (survivors) want new clothes and even TVs rather than say jeans, skirts and T-shirts that have been sent by donors," said Ravi Shankar.

A woman victim complained: "People have given us torn clothes. But we are not poor, why should be wear torn clothes? I have been wearing this same sari for the last five days".

AID-India is afraid that what is happening is "chaotic relief without sufficient planning or consideration for the people affected".

Said Singh: "What we need is good coordination and an understanding of the situation. There should also be proper assessment of what people need."
